Poatina Resort Village
Village of Hope becomes Centre for the Arts
The village of Poatina, 45 minutes from Launceston in Tasmania, was purchased by Fusion from Hydro Tasmania in 1995. An Aboriginal word meaning “shelter” or “cave”, Poatina provides a unique opportunity to care for the homeless, unemployed young people, and the elderly in a supportive atmosphere. Established as a tourist resort with a motel and restaurant at its heart, Poatina is also the international headquarters of Fusion and its main training centre.
Set amongst breathtaking scenery at the edge of the Great Western Tiers World Conservation Area, Poatina has become a focal point for Fusion’s arts activities, hosting the Fusion Arts Colony and offering a variety of programs such as the Faith and the Arts Summer School, Poatina Artist’s Retreat, and the Artist in Residence Program. A number of arts interest groups also meet regularly in Poatina. These include groups for Performing Arts, Singing, Writing, Craft, and regular Glass Blowing Classes hosted by the recently established Poatina Hot Glass Studio.
The village also offers a wide range of training and job skills through a number of enterprises including a metal fabrication workshop, picture framing shop, general store, gift shop, art gallery, golf course, school, community radio station, graphic design and television studio, and service station.
The community is founded on Christian values and takes seriously the notion that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’, blending together permanent residents, students and young people in need. Thousands of visitors, both national and international, pass through the community each year making it the perfect setting for developing Fusion’s work in the arts.
